Gapuwiyak Culture and Arts Aboriginal Corporation is a recent
initiative of the remote East Arnhem Land community of Gapuwiyak, also known as
The organisation is not-for-profit. It was created to enhance
the wellbeing of Yolngu people living in the region by supporting their cultural
practices, values and intellectual property while providing opportunities for
leadership, meaningful employment and professional development.
The objects of the corporation are to:
-Provide direct relief of poverty, sickness, suffering,
distress, misfortune, disability or helplessness by delivering programs and
resources in the public interest that will enhance the wellbeing of individuals,
families and groups residing within the East Arnhem Land region.
-Provide opportunities, across generation, that will support
community cultural development through activities relating to (but not limited
to) ceremony, dance, music, performance, arts and crafts, language, oral
history, bush skills and traditional cultural knowledge. Foster and promote
cross-cultural and inter-cultural awareness of the unique cultural practice
skills and knowledge of people living in the East Arnhem Land region.
-Develop an archive (keeping place) for the care and
preservation of cultural objectives, material and documents.
-Develop partnerships, within the community, government,
private and corporate sectors, that support community cultural development in
the East Arnhem Land region.
